Hand Carved stamps

Tomorrow is my Valentine's Card workshop at Outgrown Children's boutique. I thought it'd be fun to carve some simple heart shapes for them to stamp. I got this class pack of Staedtler carving blocks from Blick, they are 1.5 x 1.5 , perfect size for little hands to hold! It's been a while since I carved my own stamps but its pretty simple. You will probably gouge your finger {i did!} but that's part of the fun :)
First, draw your designs on tracing paper in pencil, make sure they fit on your size block.

Next, flip the tracing paper onto your block and rub the back of it. I used a bone folder, but a spoon will work.

Once your image has transferred, define the shape.
I got these cutting tools from my school art department, but I hear great things about Speedball cutters. I like using the straight edged blade, holding it vertically to trace the outline of the design.

Carve away from your design, and go slow! Don't watch SATC while watching it either, too distracting.

Ink, then stamp! You may want to adjust your design after you see it stamped. Don't be discouraged if the design isn't exactly what you pictured. Just don't go too crazy because its really easy to lose the original design.

These are the stamps I carved for the workshop tomorrow.

And how they look stamped. Hope the kids like them!

A match made in heaven

Thanks to Ez, from Creature Comforts, for introducing me to this great pencil sharpener!
People always ask me at craft fairs if I sell pencil sharpeners, to go with the pencil sets. I never did because I didn't know of any cute enough, or good enough to become a part of my line. After reading Ez's post, I went out to find this sharpener. It really is the best I've ever used. It's the perfect complement to the pencil sets.

Recap of Bakesale @Home Ec

I'm so glad I got to stop by the Home EC bake sale this weekend, benefiting doctors without borders. There were so many pretty pastries! A big thanks to all the people who donated + for Jenny to hosting this delicious way to help!

I love sugar cookies but the packaging and sprinkles just swept me off my feet. Have you ever heard that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach? The way to my heart is through the oven.
If I had to choose the cutest/most delicious donation it would be this, from Polly Danger!
Heart shaped, rainbow sprinkles, and filled with chocolate? Marry me.
Plus little Italian wedding cookie delights. Yes, there is powdered sugar all over me.
What a treat- pumpkin cookies in January! I'm regretting not getting two packs of these.

I need some milk!

TreeHouse Collective @Reform School

I am so happy Reform School has these in stock! When I saw these new stamped treasures from Treehouse collective I had a hard time choosing! I picked these three because I fell in love with a few of these postage stamps. See that "postal service" stamp above? I wish the post master made updated versions!
And its so true, letters do lift spirits! {you can click on all photos to enlarge}

I also loved this collection of botanicals.

The fox got me hooked on this set!
If you aren't local to los angeles, you can find them online here
and you can buy your own vintage postage from them too; I ordered mine today I hope they come soon.
As for these envelopes, they will be great for sending out my special Valentines.
{Guess who else is a fan and bought these on saturday?}

Anticipating a slow season, i responded to this tweet:

and I'm the one they chose!

Its a great shop and I love being among the first to see new products come in.

I love these High School Portrait Series from artist Nancy Julson-Rieley.

Their hair-dos are amazing.

Owly heart cut outs :)

An old favorite, which would be a great gift for Valentine's day.

So many people come and sit in this tee pee, its quite roomy inside!

My favorite thing about reform school is their displays. They really stick to their old school aesthetic and so many people want to buy these! Its my goal to take paper pastries to an out of state craft fair this year and I have been racking my brain to come up with a travel friendly display. I love these vintage card holders, and there are so many on etsy! I've bought 3 of them and am hoping to find more soon.

The Reader

I had a very productive weekend! I finally got around to taking pictures of the address labels and put them up in the shop. They come in pink or kraft and would make the perfect finishing touch to any valentine.

Recap of Sewing Class @ Home Ec

Last night I finished my sewing 101 class with Jenny Ryan @ Home Ec.
The first class we learned all the basics of the sewing machine. Bobbin winding, threading the machine, straight and zig zag stitching. Always remember to put the presser foot down before sewing!

The second class we started sewing our tote bag. We had the option of cutting our fabric with scissors or a rotary cutter. The blade and cutting mat looked all too familiar so I tried that method. The rotary is a completely different sensation from an x-acto knife; instead of pulling back towards you, you are pushing down and rolling forward. Even though I had a ruler to guide me, I still had a hard time cutting the pattern straight. Next time I will rely on these handy dress maker shears.

Jenny was a great teacher, there to guide us but not over bearing.

It was so much fun and I am completely pleased with my tote. It is not perfect but you can't even tell! Pretty good for my first time making something out of fabric.
My completed tote- I'm in love with this print!
These are the tote straps.
This fabric, and all the tools are avilable at home ec for purchase.
I wanted to take photos of the shop but I was too busy learning :)
I hope to get in there soon!
p.s. i want these scissors they're so cute!
